i have never seen anything like this before and it's another blow to long island. we had hurricane sandy, now this storm we are dealing with. >> a major digging out in the new england states after a massive storm covers the region with up to 3 feet of snow. hello, everybody, i'm bruce johnson, thanks for joining us, that record storm packing hurricane forced wind gusts has crippled the northeast. a if foot of snow in new york, up to 3 feet in bridgeport, connecticut. we'll have more on that in a

bit. on new york's long island, drivers had to be res crewed from their vehicles after getting stranded. at least four deaths are being blamed on this storm. >> people from new york, straight up through new england, are digging out. after a nor'easter dumped more than 3 feet of snow in some areas. >> we have a snow blower, so my husband is somewhere in the neighborhood cleaning other people's houses. >> highways turned into parking lots overnight. emergency crews moved in to rescue dozens of people forced to spend the night in their cars on new york's long island. in connecticut, workers tried to keep the sidewalks outside their businesses clear. connecticut's governor is asking people to stay off the roads so plows can clear the streets. many people would have trouble even getting to their cars. many vehicles are buried under the snow. >> it's a similar scene in massachusetts. streets are filled with people digging out their cars. in boston, some residents chose

to run or walk. >> and along the massachusetts coast, some people had to leave their homes because of flooding. as the storm moves further out to sea, power crews are working to get electricity back to 650,000 customers. while others are just enjoying this big blast of winter. marley hall for cbs news, hartford, connecticut. and we're going to go live to hartford in ten minutes. that storm is having a big impact on travel to and from the washington area. at this hour, new york's airports have reopened, but many flights from the washington area to new york and boston are canceled. when d.c. travel agent advises to go online before heading to the airport. amtrak train services running to new york, the service between new york and boston is shut down tonight. megabus says it canceled many bus trips between washington and maine. in all cases, passengers who have travel plans to the

northeast corridor over the next several days, you should go online or call your airline, bus, or train company to learn the status of your transportation before heading out. local power company crews are sending help north for those people that are stranded. we spoke just a few minutes ago to our local utility companies. pepco tells us it sent 150 crews to new jersey and southern new england to help restoring electricity and removing down trees from power lines. they sent employers to help with customer call centers there. the power sent 250 crews to new jersey and massachusetts and bg and e sent 40 crews to help areas affected by the storm in the northeast. here at home, we caught a break, only strong winds across the region. let's go over to erica grow. >> that's right, bruce. we had strong winds during the overnight and into the early morning and they are a result of this huge blizzard that is up in the northeast. we still actually have some snow showing up on satellite

and radar from that departing blizzard. you can see it affecting eastern portions of maine, but pulling away and gusty winds will create blizzard conditions in the northeast because of that blowing snow. here at home, we are in the clear and it was a decent afternoon once the wind settled down a little bit. of course, they are gusty, but nowhere near where they were. 48 miles an hour with a peek wind gust. in new market, we had a wind gust of 46 miles per hour. the peek wind gust throughout the area were between 45 and 50 in general. but we did have a peek wind gust outside of dulles airport of 55 miles per hour. so when you factor in how chilly it is out there with upper 30s to around 40 degrees, that windchill making it feel like it's in the 20s all day long and overnight tonight, it's going to get downright cold. we're expecting very chilly temperatures and more on that coming up in your full weather forecast. bruce, back to you. >> thanks, erica.

the seven month old girl suffocated to death and tonight, her 14-year-old brother is charged with her murder. jonathan aguela has been charged as an adult in the death of larisa. the teenager told police he cover the baby's mouth and nose with his hands until she stopped crying. their mother came home from work early friday morning and couldn't wake the child. she called for medics who transported the baby to holy cross hospital where she was pronounced dead. the police tonight are investigating the deadly shooting involving one of their own. police say officers shot a woman who lunged them with a knife. that welcome died at the scene. it happened late last night. officers were called to an apartment in the 4200 block of 52nd avenue. neighbors say a woman armed with a knife was trying to get into different apartment buildings. the name has not been released yesterday. a maryland girl was helping one fire victim at a time. lauren sends care packages and drops them off at different

fire departments and hospitals. you might think she would be the last person to do this because she recently lost her home. >> she's always been a caring kid, but maybe because it gives her a tiny bit of putting the pieces back and a little bit of power that the fire took away. >> lauren has come to deliver her care packages to the fire department for future fire victims. the fire captain invited the little girl after hearing about lauren's luggage. >> wow. >> lauren puts so much thought in each one of these care packages. for a little girl, she has a blanket, she has dolls. stuffed animals and coloring books. if anyone knows what it's like to lose a home, it would be lauren. >> after my fire, i just wanted a blanket. my mom asked around and we had some extras, so i asked, could we give them to people after fires? >> lauren's town home burned down this past july. while lauren and her family are

rebuilding their lives, they are trying to help others pick up the pieces. and she packed in every detail. >> it's different sometimes. >> the idea, lauren's luggage rolled out shortly after their own tragedy, since the summer, lauren has delivered roughly 100 care packages to johns hopkins personal victims and fire stations around the area. >> i helped another person, because you can't prevent them, but you can help. >> it was a tough thing to go through, but throwing myself behind what she was doing is more positive than focusing on everything we lost. >> in maryland, wusa9. >> good for her. lauren's lug cadge luggage went to hurricane sandy victims. coming up, a community on edge is the search for an accused killer who happens to be a cop intensifies this weekend. >> also, we're going to go back to connecticut live where a massive digout is underway after that deadly snowstorm.

in california, authorities intensified their man hunt today for a former l.a. police officer and navy reservist suspected in three killings. the s.w.a.t. teams on the ground, helicopters in the air. authorities searched the san bernardino mountains for christopher dorner. his pickup truck burned out may have been a decoy. he's accused of killing a police officer. the daughter of a police

officer and her fiance. and are rambling online manifesto. he listed targets who he blames for firing from the police department. four deaths in the u.s. are being blamed on that storm that pounded the northeast with snow. marley, what's the latest up there? >> well, bruce, things here in hartford seem calm. and if you take a look behind me, you saw a car go by. the travel van that was instituted by the governor has been lifted. we are beginning to see traffic, but many roads here in connecticut are still impassable. that's also the case across the northeast. in fact, last night when two feet of snow was dumped here in connecticut, there were many people who were stuck on the roads in their cars overnight. even emergency vehicles, and snow removal vehicles getting stuck. so today, people are beginning to dig out if they can, many

people's cars are completely covered with snow. marley, there's a silver lining in all of this. they already had four deaths. what's the plan? >> well, many roads here in connecticut and hartford, more accurately, have been cleared for the road behind me, but many are still impassable and there is one death, actually, reported here in connecticut. the governor announced earlier today that a connecticut woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver while clearing snow. so that was the one tragedy reported in this state. bruce. >> okay, marley, thanks a lot. that is four deaths total. thanks for that live report. wusa9 is your home for the grammy's. during the show, which starts sunday night at 8:00, we are hosting a live web chat with two of the radio personalities.

okay, you know this area of connecticut. three feet of snow, you know, 6 inches down here. can they handle three feet? >> no, three feet is beyond the threshold of what you can reasonably handle in connecticut. and it is devastating for them. in fact, one of my old

coworkers, a photographer and a reporter were out on the road. they got run off the road and they were stuck there for eight hours until they finally got help. >> this is in hartford? >> yeah, this is along the shoreline. they got run off the road. unbelievable. 3 feet of snow in bridge port, connecticut. and here, of course, we got a few inches in some of the suburbs. and we had wind during the day today. that's all from that same storm. let's take a look outside with the michael and son weather cam. a beautiful shot here. of course it is chilly out there, but nowhere near as windy as it was earlier today. 39 and it feels like 31. the dew point is 12. that's not too bad. winds out of the north, northwest at 13 miles per hour. looking at our weather headlines, we'll see the winds diminish overnight tonight. that is going to allow our temperature to get cold tonight with clear skies and calming winds. there's nothing to hold on to that heat. it will lead to a sunny sunday.

clear skies leading to more sunshine during the day and monday morning, that's when we're looking for our next chance of rain fall. 35 degrees at the airport. 37 in manassas. 41 in culpeper. milder numbers tomorrow than what we had today and much less windy. right now it feels like 36 in leesburg. 26 in gaithersburg. it feels like 30 in frederick and it feels like 35 in martinsburg. so you can see that departing blizzard and you can see our next approaching storm system all green here. that means it's warm that it's falling as rain and we expect that to all fall as rain here in our backyard on monday morning. overnight tonight, 18 to 26. very cold stuff, but at least it will be less windy. winds out of the north. and tomorrow morning, it will be sunny, but it is going to be chilly. 20s and 30s out there. at least the winds not an issue. westerly winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

winds become more southwesterly as we head into the day. that's going to bump up our temperatures. a mostly sunny day. it should be a pleasant day to get outside. of course, it has that february chill, but nothing extreme here. as we head into monday, we're looking at that next area of rain approaching. it's going to be a quick moving storm system. by monday afternoon, we're in the clear and tuesday, there will be breezy. it's going to be milder than average. lots of sunshine and a high of 51 degrees. in the seven-day outlook, a chance of wintery mix on wednesday evening. we'll be okay. it's going to be mild through the workweek and then getting chillier as we head toward the weekend. a nice day on friday with a high of 48. only 40 degrees on saturday and i do think that we have the potential for some pretty chilly air moving in next weekend. but at least this monday morning commute, when we're going to have rain falling, it is just rain. we don't have to worry about any wintery weather on monday morning. >> thank god.

west virginia either. bob huggins. get 17, win 63-50. all right, some hockey now. the washington capitals have five points. let me say that again, five points. they played 11 games. so that isn't good. what's wrong? i think you would say, you can point to a lot of things, primarily the lack of training camp, but isn't that an excuse by now? i think so, and so does the general manager. he has a theory. undisciplined hockey, now normally that would imply a coaching problem, but not in this case. he told reporters this is all on the players, not the coaches, and he pointed to one specific thing. >> the issue with our club right now in my mind is all these penalties were taken. it's too much. >> we are working hard, we are trying to work, but we have to work smart. as a result, we tend to take

penalties and getting killed on them. >> at home tonight, the verison center is a happy place to be these days when the ice is up and the wood is down. just ignore the first 33 games of the season, why don't you. the ones without john wahl, you cannot do that, but in the land of silver line, the wizards are 9-7 since he returned last night. they beat another playoff bound team. now go to a game and you're going to get an idea of how fast this guy is. john wahl cannot be covered. if he ever learns to shoot and while these highlights show the offense, the head coach believes the defense difference is something else. >> it's a matter of five guys being connected and we're connected right now. no question. and we are covering for each other and that's the main thing. we've got five guys that are committed defensively. >> right now, wall proving why he is one of the up and coming stars in the league.
